HAWKER stalls are a firm favourite in Malaysia and in an effort to promote the best, the MyHawker mobile application was introduced by the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry under the Hawker, Petty Trader and Wakaf Hindu Development Unit last year.
Some 5,000 users registered as users of the app was promoted in Section 14, Petaling Jaya by MCA and Gerakan representatives during a morning walkabout.
Petaling Jaya Selatan MCA chairman Datuk Donald Lim said, “Our country is famous for its variety of food, especially those sold in hawker centers. Local delights such as roti canai, satay, chee cheong fun and bak kut teh are popular.
“With the MyHawker app, the public can share their favourite food stalls and help boost business for the hawkers.
“Users can also rate the cleanliness of the shop and this will motivate hawkers to ensure their premises are kept clean all the time. My advice to the hawkers is to keep their food affordable and ensure good hygiene at the stalls,” said Lim.
Meanwhile, Bukit Gasing Gerakan state constituency coordinator Chai Ko Thing said the government introduced a microcredit scheme under the 1Malaysia Hawkers and Small Businesses Foundation.
The microcredit scheme has been in existence for three years and is open to Malaysian Chinese (who are not declared bankrupt) between the ages of 18 and 60.
Businesses must be registered with the local government and Companies Commission of Malaysia.
Successful applicants will be able to secure loans between RM5,000 and RM20,000 with 4% interest rate per annum.
Chai said the government loan aimed to help small traders who may be facing difficulties securing a loan from the banks.
“A hawker in Klang is now doing very well after taking this loan,” said Chai.
Besides introducing the MyHakwer App and microcredit scheme, Lim and Chai together with the Seksyen 14A Rukun Tetangga chairman Tee Kee Tian also distributed the national flag in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka celebrations.
