Gerakan National President Y.B. Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong said proposal by Deputy Prime Minister to set up a Special Committee consisting of Muslim and Non-Muslim leaders to study and analyse the Private Member’s Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 [Act 355] is a worthy proposal.

Mah opined that the proposed Select Committee to amend Act 355 comprising Muslim and non-Muslim leaders is a consultative and transparent way to ensure voices from all quarters are considered.

“Gerakan respects Islam is a matter of Muslims and its status as the official religion of the Federation, however, the proposal made by PAS President Hadi Awang contravenes the Federal Constitution as well as the fabric nature of this country.”

Mah continued that Gerakan has decided to recommend its Secretary-General, Y.B. Datuk Liang Teck Meng and Deputy Youth Chief Andy Yong Kim Seng who is head of the legal team to represent the party in the Special Committee stated above.

“Andy Yong and our legal team has been constantly studying the Bill and work out solutions, Gerakan is committed in safeguard the Federal Constitution from any attempt to alter it,” said Mah.

Mah said if Malaysia wants to move forward, it has to be done in an inclusive manner and by having two separate legal systems, it will not only create confusion and an open-ended environment for opportunists but also tear the country apart.

“Justice must be served and criminal laws must be applicable to all Malaysians as crime is indiscriminate against race and religion.”
