Gerakan’s party machinery is ready to face the two parliamentary by-elections next month, said its President Mah Siew Keong.
Mah, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said Gerakan had formed a special committee to oversee the machinery for the by-elections in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, and Sungai Besar, Selangor.
He said Selangor Gerakan Chairman David Ang Chin Tat would lead the Gerakan machinery in Sungai Besar, while Perak Gerakan Chairman Soo Kay Ping would lead in Kuala Kangsar.
“For now, we have identified 2,000 members who will be mobilised in stages and will be divided between the two constituencies,” he told reporters after the prize-presentation ceremony of the Hilir Perak district Healthy Baby Competition here today.
A total of 200 babies took part in the competition that was organised by Teluk Intan Wanita Gerakan division and the Resident’s Representative Committee.
Mah, who is also Teluk Intan MP, said all the component parties of Barisan Nasional (BN) should work together to ensure victory for the party’s candidate as well as to increase the majority votes.
At the 13th General Election, the BN candidate in Kuala Kangsar, Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, won after defeating PAS candidate Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah and independent candidate Kamilia Ibrahim with a majority of 1,082 votes.
In Sungai Besar, Noriah Kasnon, who was deputy plantations industries and commodities minister, won the Sungai Besar seat after defeating PAS candidate Mohamed Salleh M.Hussin with a majority of 399 votes.
Mah said Gerakan would campaign from house to house to win votes for the candidate as well as conduct more programmes to be close to the people.
The Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections are being held following the deaths of Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar and Noriah in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak, on May 5.
The Election Commission has fixed the by-elections to be held simultaneously on June 18, while the nomination day would be on June 5.
