The Langat 2 water treatment plant and its distribution system (LRAL2) is the only way to resolve the water crisis in Selangor and the Klang Valley, said Association of Water and Energy Research Malaysia’s (AWER) president S. Piarapakaran.

He said the water shortage was becoming more critical now with the treated water reserve margin becoming lower.

In the southern part of Selangor, he said, the reserve margin was less than 1%.

“The problem will be more acute during a drought or dry weather,” he said in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the existing 34 water treatment plants in Selangor could produce only 4.371 billion litres of treated water per day, while the demand has increased to 4.322 billion litres per day.

Last June 17, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili urged the Selangor government to fulfil the terms of the water restructuring and the LRAL2 project agreed by the previous state leadership.

The federal government, he said, was committed to ensuring continuous water supply in the Klang Valley and would take over the operational control of water supply distribution in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya if the restructuring of the water industry in Selangor remained unresolved.

Apart from building the LRAL2 project, Piarapakaran said efforts to reduce non-revenue water (NRW), like repair of leaked and damaged pipes, should also be carried out.

The water catchment areas for LRAL2 should also be gazetted as permanent reserves to protect the quality of water, he added.

Meanwhile, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) executive director (Corporate Affairs Division), Priscilla Alfred said disruption was due to high demand for water, which had reached the maximum capacity level.

“The situation has worsened because the number of people has increased and water usage increased by 3% during Ramadan.” – Bernama
