He said he relinquished his post for the benefit of the rakyat (people), but his exit had not subdued the greed and arrogance of politicians who claimed reform, equality and justice to be their goals.
“In the end, my resignation has proven to be an exercise in vain since the people’s trust has been abused beyond redemption,” Abdul Khalid said in a statement.
“During my service as menteri besar, my team and I lost countless hours trying to appease this group of politicians at the expense of the rakyat’s rights and interests,” he said.
On the developments around Pakatan Rakyat, which the DAP declared to have ceased to exist, he said the state leaders’ obsession with politics had caused the breakup of the opposition pact and was “placing a lot more rakyat-centred issues on the back burner”.
Abdul Khalid said Pakatan leaders, who liked to consider themselves the people’s champions, should lead by example and treat their partners and allies, supporters and sympathisers with respect and dignity.
“Intervening in internal party issues should not be a norm for any coalition, what more Pakatan Rakyat.
“Greed, insensitivity and lack of magnanimity are all ingredients for deep distrust, non-cooperation and finally fallout within Pakatan Rakyat. Sadly, in the end, the rakyat are the biggest losers,” he said.
Abdul Khalid had to resign as menteri besar during the leadership crisis in Selangor last year and was replaced by his political rival, Mohamed Azmin Ali.
The crisis had caused tension between PAS and PKR and the DAP, which supported PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail while PAS was against her being named the sole nominee for the menteri besar post.
