Even without PAS, a Pakatan Rakyat coalition comprising of only PKR and DAP is capable of retaining the Selangor state government in the event of snap elections, non-governmental organisation Kuasa said today.
Kuasa chief executive, Praba Ganesan told reporters today, based on the NGO’s latest reports on the promises made by Selangor and Perak state governments during the last general elections two years ago – there is an “impressive” approval from civil society for the PR brand.
“PAS leaving the coalition will not be terminal for a restructured (Pakatan) coalition to do well. We believe there is enough reason to believe they will cross the finishing line,” Praba said.
PAS, in its latest Muktamar, adopted a resolution to cut ties with DAP but stay in Pakatan Rakyat. Some of their leaders in Penang had already resigned from state positions.
However, if they were to do the same in Selangor, it would likely cause snap state elections, as PAS holds 15 state seats to DAP’s 15 and PKR’s 13.
Kuasa is an NGO started months after the 13th general election and keeps a scorecard on the Perak and Selangor state government’s election pledges annually.
In its latest scorecard for the two state governments, Kuasa said the Selangor state government was more transparent about their promises and progress made compared to the Barisan Nasional-led Perak state government, which had refused to give its own feedback on its electoral pledges.
However, this time around, Perak received a higher score due to “low bars” set for its promises, which are vague and non-specific. It scored 49.3%, climbing up from 24.9% previously.
The Selangor state government scored 59.5% compared to 67.4% previously, with its scores reduced mainly due to a solitary response from an Umno assemblyperson in Selangor, while none of the assemblymen responded in the previous survey.
However, Praba said the Selangor state government appeared to be lagging in Malay community-related issues.
“Many organisations have been critical of the state government in these issues and have given them low scores,” he said.
“This might be a problem if PKR and DAP go for the elections alone.” – June 9, 2015.
